My philosophy of discipline is that there should be a set of behavioral expectations and students are explicitly taught how to follow them. It is important to establish a climate where emphasis is placed on teaching social behaviors and students are commended and rewarded for following them. School-wide Positive Behavior Intervention & Supports (PBIS) is research-based and proven to improve school culture and climate, academic success, and behavior. Even if the entire system is not used in a school, pieces (such as positive reinforcements) can be used for improvement.
